New lithograph exhibit opens

Visitors will be able to view the newest exhibit at the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum, "Masters in the Field: Great Artist of Lithography," created by curators Barbara Henshall and Jackie Borgeson. The exhibit highlights the museum's extensive collection of 18th and 19th century wildlife illustrations. The artist represented include the two most prominent in the field, John J.; Audubon and John Gould. The project allows the museum to rotate out of storage a wide variety of over 500 hand-collected lithographs and limited edition prints housed in the Selsor Fine Arts collection. The exhibit was funded through a $400 institutional grant from the Kansas Museum Association and by contributions from museum members. Chanute High School art instructor Rick Bushnell matted and framed the lithographs, with the assistance of student Ruth Babb. Following its premier in Chanute the traveling exhibit of 48 famed lithographs will be available for display across the United States. The exhibit is broken into three themed areas. In the Snark Theater are lithographs from the voyage of the French research ship L'Astrolabe in the 1820s and 1830s. The Selsor Art Gallery presents different artists and styles along with books from the Stott Explorers Library. Lastly, lithographs of animals from Africa and Borneo are exhibited  in the second floor hallway. The museum and gift shop are open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 1 to 5 p.m.
