Chanute Community Closet

About

Attention Chanute Community 🤍
I want to share something new our store is offering for our town.
We have started a small Community Closet for those in need. If you or someone you know could use assistance, please call 620-431-6433 to schedule an appointment.
We currently have men’s, women’s, boys’, girls’, toddler, and infant clothing, along with some baby equipment, accessories, and limited hygiene products available.
A few months ago, an elderly man came into our store and shared that his house had burned down. He told me he was sleeping under a tree where his home once stood. He asked if we had a mat he could sleep on. That moment hit me hard. A mat. Something so small to many of us meant everything to him.
He is not the only person who has quietly reached out over the past few years. And I know there are more.
For a long time, I’ve wanted to create a space where people in need could come without shame and find basic necessities.
This Community Closet is our first step. It is small, and we are calling it our trial closet as we learn what works best for both the community and our store while balancing our other responsibilities.
Because of our limited space and staffing, we kindly ask that you please call to schedule an appointment rather than stopping by without notice.
As I’ve been quietly working on this over the past few months, I’ve realized the space still isn’t big enough to meet the needs of most.
I’ve been praying for guidance about whether to renovate our basement for more room or seek a something different altogether.
Expanding would require funding, as well as people willing to donate their time and energy to help it grow.
If you feel led to help financially, we will have small black donation boxes at the checkout registers in both stores starting tomorrow. You’re welcome to donate loose change or whatever you feel led to give — every little bit will go directly toward supporting the Community Closet.
At this time, we do not need clothing donations, but that may change in the future. I’ve created a Facebook page to help keep everyone informed and updated:
One thing we could absolutely use right now, though… is hangers! If anyone would like to donate hangers, we would be so thankful.
I don’t know exactly what the future holds for this closet, but I will continue to follow where God leads and do what I can to serve our community.
Thank you for supporting us, and thank you for caring about Chanute. 🤍
